Win a Gift Basket of Vegan Marshmallows!

sweet_and_sara_basket.jpg

The temperature is getting warmer outside, and for many folks, that means it's time for fun weekend getaways, which include camping and nights spent sitting around a fire roasting marshmallows and making smores. Fortunately for vegans, the compassionate folks over at Sweet and Sara have created some superb vegan marshmallows that will stand up to your campfire and hot cocoa and are even good when veganizing your favorite rice-crispy-treat recipe without the nasty gelatin found in most marshmallows.

Now is your chance to win. VegCooking Blog and PETA Living fans can enter to win a fabulous gift basket of vegan marshmallows!

Sweet and Sara founder Sara Sohn has been vegan for 17 years. A few years back, she decided it had been way too long since she'd had one of her favorite childhood snacks: the rice crispy treat. With no culinary background but a lot of determination (and vegan sweets on the mind), Sara began her quest to create a vegan marshmallow, "the Holy Grail of animal-free sweet treats," and she did it!

With Sweet and Sara's marshmallows, the possibilities are endless. Mix them into vegan brownies for a rocky road effect. Dip them in chocolate fondue. Add them to holiday yams. Sweeten coffee or tea, or simply enjoy them as they are!

Enter to win a fabulous Sweet and Sara gift basket containing vanilla marshmallows, toasted coconut marshmallows, original smores, peanut butter smores, and bark. Just leave a short comment below telling us about the delicious vegan creation you will accent with your marshmallows if you win. One winner will be chosen at random.

The contest ends on June 30, and we'll contact the winners by July 3. Be sure to read our privacy policy and terms and conditions, as you're agreeing to both by commenting. Good luck!

Maria :

i think i would just eat them plain!!

Oh, we have wanted to try vegan marshmallows for years! My three daughters have felt left out at just about every picnic and bonfire and picnic, watching others make s'mores. So as much as I'd love to give some creative answer, the truth of the matter is: we'd make the campside classic~ s'mores.

Megan :

I would love to swirl some melted 'mallow into some brownies!

Jamie :

I'd have to start with some rice krispie treats. It's been so long since I've had such a simple pleasure :)

Kara O :

I'll definitely be making some scrumptious smores with these!

Kyle :

My girlfriend's vegan and always lamenting about how she misses rice krispie treats. I would love to be able to make her some... (for me too.)

Oh...YUMMY!!!...My kids and I would love to win this basket from Sweet and Sara.We became vegetarians in December 2008,so they couldn't have marshmallows in their cocoa this past winter. They sound so good...they already are a delicious vegan creation by themselves!!!

Justin :

I haven't been able to find vegan marshmallows around me! I want to make everything i can- smores, rice krispies, everything!

Michelle :

I am a huge brownie fan, so a batch of peanut butter smore brownies sounds amazing!! YUM!

Suzanne :

S’mores Pies
Serves 6

What you’ll need:
1. One package of Keebler Ready Crusts mini graham cracker crusts (6 to a package)
2. One batch of VegCookingBlog’s Chocolate Mousse (http://www.vegcooking.com/recipeshow.asp?RequestID=1668&Search=mousse)
3. Sweet ‘n Sara’s vanilla marshmallows

How to do it:
Prepare Chocolate Mousse recipe as directed. Refrigerate for 4 hours to overnight. Place mini crusts on a baking sheet. Spoon Mousse into graham cracker crusts and top each with a Sweet & Sara marshmallow. Place pan under the oven broiler (set to low) for approximately 5 to 7 minutes, depending on oven temperature, until marshmallows are melty and gooey. Serve alongside a scoop of soy ice cream or top with whipped soy topping, if desired.

Danielle B :

It has been far too long since I've had smores.

Krista :

Oh, I have wanted a smore for 20 years now. I just discovered that vegan marshmallows exist and I can't wait to try them!

Clea :

Hi! I would make an awesome s'more, or chop up the marshmallows and use 'em as an ice cream topper...maybe even everything-topper!

Natasha :

I'll make vegan rice krispie sqaures with the marshmellows, add them in soy ice cream, and dip them in vegan caramel.

I will finally be able to give my son some vegan marshmallows, as we are unable to find them here anywhere! :) We will use them for S'mores, I'm sure!

Karl Keene :

We would probably use them to make vegan S'mores, like my wife said! :)

Katie :

You mean I have to put the marshmallows on something? Can't I just scoff them straight from the basket!! Lol!

I'd love to put them on top of a hot chocolate with squirty cream and chocolate (all vegan of course!)

Kim Abbott :

Even the Plain Marshmallows sound Yummy... but the RC Treats are a MUST TRY!

Karen Cohn :

I have endless ideas for these vegan marshmallows! Hot chocolate, topping for mashed sweet potatoes or just an afternoon snack sounds great to me!

Michelle :

If I won this gift basket, I would make rice krispie treats, roast some over a fire, or make some ambrosia and top it with those delicious vegan marshmallows. I've had the s'mores and someone asked me to describe the taste I responded with "It tastes like heaven."

Kathlee :

I have a gas oven, so I'm going to put one on a long fork and toast it over the flame. Then when I pull the first layer off and eat it, I'm going to toast the next layer, and the next, until I get to the last little bit. It's been so long since I enjoy marshmallows!

Shannon Ballard :

I can't wait to make my own began Rocky Road clusters with dark chocolate and almonds.

Tracy :

I have been craving rice crispy treats for sooooo long!! I hate the fact that I can't eat the regular ones! There are sooo many things I would make with these. Rice crispy treats to start, SMORES for sure, and a sweet potato casserole that I can never eat at holiday functions because they always use regular marshmallows!

Eric B :

Wow! I grew up making s'mores around the campfire. This was in the days way before they were mainstream and had been turned into chem laden granola bars. Got my vegan chocolate and grahams ready to go, just waiting for the 'mellows.

Alyson Paige Warren :

I teach socio-econmoically challenged gifted and talented kids over the summer. I am always looking for healthy snacks to bring in for everyone to enjoy.

I would love to bake some vegan rice crispy treats with Sweet and Sarah's marshmallows. They would make for great brain food, both for powering my students through a mid-afternoon slump and for educating them about a vegan lifestyle!

marah munyan :

yum-o

I know it's the wrong time of year, but I'd love a mug of hot cocoa with a vegan marshmallow in it.

I would love to melt down some vegan chocolate chips and dip the vanilla marshmallows in the chocolate sauce! add chopped peanuts and then refrigerate...mmm!

Or just plain! You dont' really need to do anything too them they are so DE-LISH!!

I would love to win this! I have a huge sweet tooth and I could bring them on camping trips to prove that YES, they are REALLY GOOD VEGAN MARSHMALLOWS IN EXISTENCE!

Aisling :

Definitely vegan smores/cookies!

Caroline :

I would use the marshmallows for rice crispy treats!

Heidi :

I absolutely can't wait to make Rocky Road! My grandpa has created a tradition of making his famous Rocky Road recipe every time the family gets together. I want to veganize that tradition!

jenn :

I love Sweet & Sarah's marshmallows - I make smores in the toaster oven - I just put a marshmallow on one end of the cracker, a bit of chocolate on the other side - toast til the marshmallow poufs up, then break the cracker in the middle and make it a sandwich. Yum!

Heather :

I'd use them for crisp rice treats with earth balance in place of butter...yum!

kim c. :

I would love to try this product and smores are calling my name.

Hannah Claire Jarvis :

YUMMY!!!!! I would sit & eat the whole lot just as they are!! They are amazing sounding products! I have a very sweet tooth & would love these. I would save a few to make smores from though. I would get my vegan & non-vegan friends alike round my house for a vegan-fireside party!

Since becoming Vegan, there are only two things that I miss. Grilled hotdogs Chicago style and Smores. I HAVE FOUND THE VEGGIE DOG But until today I thought I would never reconnect with my old girlscouts roots. Cant wait to try them !! IM EXCITED AS CAN B

Laura :

I was a vegatrian as a child turned vegan as an adult (to the displeasure of my family)

I would use these marshmellows to PROMOTE veganism. With this product I can show everone how much BETTER it is to be a vegan, and with more flavour!

Debra Benfer :

I love yams. My marshmallows would go onto a bowl of warm yams. Yum.

Carol Hilberg-Lau :

I am looking forward to concocting my own version of rocky road ice-cream, using Coconut Bliss (Chocolate), toasted almonds and walnuts, and- of course- Sweet & Sara's (toasted coconut - yes!) marhmallows...frozen nirvana, I believe!

Reva Smilkstein :

Since I've stopped eating Rocky Road Ice Cream, I would try a homemade version of vegan ice cream with the vegan marshmallows. That will be a challenge!!

Carmen Ortiz :

I have never had vegan marsmallows before. Not having marsmallows for over a year; I miss those treats you could make with rice crispies.

Yvonne :

Before I became a vegetarian I used to make a Smores Cake. I used Graham flour to make the cake then used marshmallows to make a gooey topping then finished with a chocolate ganache. I would love to be able to experiment with making a vegan version.

Of course, my kids would want some for rice crispy treats.

Jessica Ortiz :

Its been years since my mother ordered the vegan marshmallows from PETA. Floating from job to job. Now she has a new job that she loves, working with animals. I would love to surprise her on Fourth Of July with those delicious sounding mashmallows. I think we would just eat them over a BBQ. Or maybe we would just make sweet potatoes with the mashmallows as a topping.

Panya :

S'mores! I've missed them since I became vegetarian.

Guillaume :

Rice Krispy Treats!!!

Kathy :

I'd make pistachio fluff, yum.

Courtney :

Soooo many smores!

Winter :

Sara Alvarado :

MY DOUGHTER SHE IS 16 NOW HAS NEVER TASTE A MARSHMALLOW IN HER LIFE, IS SOMETHING THAT SHE REALLY WILL LOVE TO HAVE, HERE IN MEXICO THERE IS NO PLACE WE CAN GET SOME WITH OUT GELATIN. I HOPE THIS TIME WE WIN. IT WIL BE COOL WE ARE GOING CAMPING OFTEN SURE SHE WILL LOVE TO SHARE THEM WITH HER VEGGIE FRIENDS..

Michelle :

I haven't had rice crispy squares for 19 years, since I became a vegetarian...that's what I would make. I miss them.

Amanda :

As a kid, my favorite way to enjoy marshmellows was to sandwich them between two apple slices spread with peanut butter. Of course, I'd also have to make a few s'mores!

Amira Itzhak :

Mmm!

Nichole :

Definitely make some rice krispy treats--haven't had them in years! can't say i'd mind a s'more either...

andrea :

i love making my own vegan ice cream, if only i had those smores.. i could make smores ice cream, woohoo

ama13 :

Homemade vegan mallomars!

Emmaline :

I would make smores with the vegan marshmallows.

Brandon F :

Maggie :

I want some s'mores. It's been too long.

There is nothing better than smores when it comes to marshmallows. Even better when it's vegan! I can't wait to try them out.

Soni :

I would make delicious chocolate rice crispy treats!! And I would get some vegan chocolate and graham crackers and make an old fashioned smore, the right way!! :)

Mellanie H :

I would definitely make s'mores for my friends and me as we sit around the fire pit on Saturday nights. If there were any left, I would just eat them plain!

um, hello. pick me?

5 layer brownie:

oats
brownie mix w/ chocolate chips
dulce sin leche
brownie crumbs
marshmallows

all vegan, of course.

5 is better than 1.

Michael Whaley :

Growing up I loved smores. Since going vegan, I have had none. However, now I can have smores once more.

Amy S :

I would make s'mores or make some rice krispy treats.....or maybe come up with a s'more themed dessert....

Shanna Alley :

I never knew they had vegan marshmallows. I would definitely like to try them and perhaps either eat then plain, or use them with hot chocolate.

Raymond Razo :

I would go and made a home-made vegan ice cream because i live ice cream so much.

Pamela Coburn :

I would open the package and pop them into my mouth, or maybe dip them in some rich dark vegan chocolate.

Deanne O'Donnell :

I would use them to make a favorite dessert from my childhood, Ambrosia Salad. The vegan version would be vegan marshmallows cut into quarters, vegan sour cream, can of mandarin oranges, can of crushed pineapple and flaked cocunut. It rest for several hours, best if overnight. Brings back memories of my mother.

KD :

S'mores.

In brownies with chocolate chunks & nuts

Roasted over a campfire.

Hindy :

I would be making smores, for sure!

Kristine :

We love all of the Sweet & Sara products and I'm not sure they would last long enough, with my kids, to use them in any recipe. They would vanish and leave behind big smiles on our faces.

Debbie Waters :

HI! Would absolutely love to win and definitely it would be s'more's. I've been a Girl Scout leader for 22 years now and I can't tell you how frustrating it is for myself & the girls that are vegetarian to see their omnivore friends eating these. Baked apples & banana boats (w/o the marshmellows-yes we could now put them in with this product, YEAH!!!) are good but not so yummy as a s'more. Thanks!

Celine L :

I would use some to take camping to make smores, some to decorate cupcakes and some just to eat plan because I could!

Marilyn Wons :

I would top my yogurt with these!

Lisa :

I WANT MARSHMALLOWS

Caitlin :

Tamara :

I desparately need this gift basket! I have turned about 10 people onto the veg life in my 11 years of being a vegetarian. Now I have been vegan for two years and need to convince those folks to join me again! I think this basket would prove to them that they don't have to miss out on the things they grew up with. I know Sweet and Sara Marshmallows are a great product. I ordered them at Thanksgiving for my Sweet Potato Casserole and it was the perfect touch. They made delicious peanut butter rice crispy treats as well. please, please please :)

amanda tink :

i would make my famous vegan fudge with it and my famous peanut butter and fluff cake :)

Eliane :

I would eat them with some strawberry ice cream. Hum...yummy!

Christian L. Wade :

I would love to put these in my hot cocoa or coffee or put them in a fudge recipe that includes marshmellows.

Lisa Mosseau :

I smear peanut butter on the marshmallows...its sooo good, might even add some chocolate chips...mmmm

Beth Mickens :

This would be so perfect! My husband has put me on my own cooking challenge to create his favorite treats, vegan style, but still be omni approved..I have already accomplished the cinnamon roll but rice krispies are number one on his list and he doesn't believe that GOOD vegan marshmallows exist so now is my time to prove him wrong and make the best rice krispies he will ever taste! Plus I am dying for some too! I literally make him and my daughter these delicious all time treats every week. It's time for mommy to be treated! I would also make candied yams and smores!!

Gisela Morales :

Gisela

I have always wanted to buy vegan marshmallows to top my carmelized sweet potato with cinnamon pastry cups but they are sold in small quantities for the price. For the above recipe I will use the roasted coconut marshmallows to complete this scrumptious and sweet bite.

Jessica :

I'll definetly use these for smores when I go camping with my family this summer. I love smores but haven't been able to have one for a long time because... gelatin.

Adrienne :

I am SO taking those toasted coconut marshmallows and mixing them into my coconut brownies...I'm drooling just thinking about it!!
The vanilla ones would be roasted over the fire when I go camping and the rest of the stuff will go directly into my tummy!!

Danielle :

I would enjoy these the best and simplest way- roasted over a campfire!

I'd just eat them plain. I miss marshmallows - it's been 8 years since I had one!

Jennifer Baird :

This would make my trips to the beach and my friends house a bit more fun! cause even though im not vegan(just vegitarian) I still dont like to eat marshmellows...just cause i know. So yeah my smores would be a lot more complete with them :P

Heidi :

I would use my marshmallows to make the classics: rice krispy treats and smores over a bonfire.

Amber G :

I would roast these marshmallows with graham crackers!

sandy :

like them plain if they are fresh

Alex :

My friend invented Sami Treat:
Marshmallows, chocolate chips, and pretzels mixed together. It's like S'mores without the graham crackers and fire!

wendy wallach :

would definitely make good use of these with candied yams.

madamerkf at aol dot com

It would have to be smores! Depending on my sweet tooth, I might break them up and make a s'more sunday!!

ashley spradley :

eat them plain the way i like them best.

cindy :

I would just love to eat them. Especially the toasted coconut ones. MMMMmmmm Good!

Danielle :

I have no clue how this would taste, but I think I would try it. I make this amazing vegan banana-almond milk smoothie shake (frozen).

I think I would take take the peanut butter smores and toss it in the blender with the shake and have myself a nice dessert!

The first thing I would probably do if I were to have these lovely little treats would be turning them into rice krispies. I remember loving home made rice krispy squares as a kid. I would also have to make smores with them, as well as topping for my hot cocoa. =)

Lydia :

s'mores and rice krispie treats!!!

Gaye McGill :

Vanilla marshmallows in my hot chocolate, but the rest get eaten as is. Yum!

Marlene :

Mmmm, so good...I would definitely eat a few as is, then add the rest to some carob cocoa (I can't eat chocolate due to migraines, alas...). Summer be darned, I want hot yummy goodness!!

Carrie :

We'd probably start with vegan rice crispy treats, then move on to s'mores.

I think I'll start with putting some in when I make vegan ice cream and either move onto smores or something of the like.

Dori :

I'm a member of my university's environmental group the president always makes these cute, but cruel, green (dyed) rice crispies. Too bad there's nothing "green" about them! Courtney :

I would make smores! Yum!

Eli :

what are the odds I'll win?

I would most likely try some new recipe, because my friends and I always do things like grab things that look like they belong together, like cookies, so I would make cupcakes for our camping trip this summer, and mix the marshmallows into the batter, and some of them, I could perhaps melt slightly, and cover the top of the cupcake, maybe even if I have leftover money for snacks, I could buy a cute cupcake topper to fit the recipe. (:

I would probably make cupcakes, but from scratch, not cheaply, because my friends & I always make things from scratch. It's our thing to do for fun. But instead of regular cupcakes, perhaps mix the marshmallows into the batter, and when they're done, I could slightly melt some marshmallows, and cover the top of the cupcake, and if I have leftover snack money, I could even get a cute cupcake topper. (:

Emily :

I'd defiantly melt chocolate on top of them then go have a romantic marshmallow date with my boyfriend! :D

Sylwia Borowska :

I would make smores and rice krispie treats!

Thanks

I think I would just eat them plain!

They sound yummy with Rice Dreams ice cream!

I would eat them all natural!!! Plain after I have some vegan dinner..

MATT :

id probably melt them down

These Vegan Marshmallows are a Godsend!!! I have only been a vegetarian for 1 1/2 years and I was just lamenting the fact that I would never be able to eat another smore in my life..Now I will be able to roast a marshmallow, slap it on a graham cracker with a piece of chocolate and I will be a happy camper!!!!

I would make 7 layer bars (Amazing!)

Vegan graham crackers + vegan butter are used to make the crust. Lay in the bottom of a baking dish. Add tons of vegan chocolate chips & walnuts and top with Sweet & Sara's marshmallows.

Bake and enjoy! Wouldn't mind having this hot with a scoop of vegan vanilla iced cream :)

Olivia :

I would actually be making vegan brownies. My friend and I make brownies (or a variation thereof) every year since she and I became ill at the same time; and we always spend hours searching for vegan alternatives. This would be the perfect (and a new, tastier) solution!

im the only one in the family that doesnt consume animal products, so im always left with nothing good to eat unless i create it myself. I'm thinking if i dont just trick my friends into eating these marshmallows as smores and then surprising them with what they ate, ill be making some rocky'rhoad' brownies!

Courtnay Stout Brown :

Vegan rice krispie treats and rocky road brownies would be wonderful!

I've been a vegetarian for over 20 years and am now going vegan. Thanks so much for this great site - you've given me so many excellent ideas! Keep up the good work!

Oh how bad I want marshmellows. I stare with envious eyes at people who eat marshmellows. If you ask me the food I most miss from being a vegetarian it would be marshmellows. People expect me to say bacon or something but no, it's marshmellows.

This would be the perfect way to show my boyfriend how easy being a vegan is! I would whip these out on a camping trip; he'd love them.

Alyse Alteri-O'Brien :

Erin :

Now that it is summertime my friends, family and I spend every Saturday sitting around a campfire, goofing off and eating food. Every time I sit there, looking bereft as they all enjoy some of their gelatinous smores, occationally waving them in my face to rub it in. I would love to wait until they had all finished their gelatinous treats and then come out with my own gloriously vegetarian, melty, sticky delights and take care to rub it in as much as possible. :)
