Marshmallows have never been on my list of "most missed desserts," but when I recently heard about a New Zealand company that sells vegan marshmallow kits, the wheels began to turn and I started thinking of other ways to use marshmallow mixture before it sets into squares. Then there was the "aha!" moment when I realized it could possibly be whipped up into the perfect meringue-like topping.
So you can't imagine how happy I was when Angel Foods, the company mentioned above, actually contacted me about testing its vegan marshmallow kits. Of course I said, "Hell yeah, but only if you'll donate a kit for my readers too!" (Contest details below.)
I just received my kit, and I must say that it does seem intimidating at first. Two packets of powdery white substances—I, too, wondered how many alarms that set off—and a seemingly complicated set of instructions (and you have to supply your own water, starch, sugar, syrup, and vanilla). But after reading the instructions, I realized that it's not complicated at all—you just need the proper tools (a candy thermometer and a stand mixer being the most important) and patience. I had neither.
![]() |
I have to admit that I skipped the thermometer and just eyeballed it, and I also used a hand mixer instead of one on a stand, which the instructions do not recommend. I probably rushed the mixing process, too, because I felt like my arm was about to fall off, but with that said, the marshmallows still turned out great! Light, sweet, and totally addictive.
Half of the mixture was placed in a pan to cool and then later cut into squares. They are honestly much tastier than I even expected. The other half was added to the top of lemon bars for a meringue-like topping. For the meringue, I mixed the marshmallows halfway through the cooling process to try and create additional air pockets for lightness. This probably wasn't necessary and made the meringue look not-so-pretty, so I recommend piping it or scooping it onto your already-baked bars or pie as soon as it's done mixing. Regardless of how it looks, it tastes exactly how I remember lemon meringue pie.

Sorry for the long post, but reading it was worth it because now is your chance to win one of the vegan marshmallow kits from Angel Foods. Just leave a short comment below about what you'll do with the vegan marshmallows if you win.
The contest ends on May 20, and the winner will be notified by May 23. And just so you know…by leaving a comment, you're acknowledging that you've read and agreed to our privacy policy and our terms and conditions. Good luck!

If I won the vegan marshmellows I would share them with others in my family and try to open their mind to the vegan lifestyle. I think it is important to be healthy and in order to do so you have to care about what you are putting into your body. In addition, rewarding your self with good food causes dramatic changes in your attitude. Helping you to make a difference in others lives.

If I win the marshmallows, I'll use them to win friends and influence others. Seriously, I bake a lot for the professors, staff, and students in my department (Nuclear Engineering). I would love to show them that there is nothing I can't do within a vegan diet! I always enjoy watching some middle-aged men enjoy sweet treats, and then casually mention "Yeah, I brought those", which everyone knows means "they're vegan!"

Wow, vegan marshmallows! My son absolutely loves marshmallows - when he was 5, he wrote a letter to Santa that requested only a Leap Pad and some marshmallows for Christmas that year. Once we found out about where gelatin comes from, we dropped marshmallows from our shopping lists, much to his disappointment. I would absolutely love to be able to watch him enjoy his favorite desert again!

I would love a chance to try these out to share with my my friends and family who often don't understand there are still a plethora of food choices even if you don't use animal products.... plus I would love to have rice krispy treats back in my life!! :o)

If I win a marshmallow kit, I'd use it for my planned Sneaky Vegan Dinner Party for my naysaying omni friends.
The Sneaky Vegan Dinner Party, as I imagine it now, would consist of me making a fabulous multi-course candlelit feast, complete with awesome vegan wines. As my friends know me to be a vegetarian, they'll certainly know there wouldn't be meat in any of the dishes but they'll have no idea they're vegan. At the end of the night, I'd let the proverbial cat out of the bag and watch their amazed realizations that vegan food can be so tasty.
Using these marshmallows for a dessert would be so very sneaky and would make the reveal all the more awesome. I'm also notorious for eschewing marshmallows on sweet potatoes at our Thanksgiving gathering. They saw my refusal as an inconvenience. How delicious--literally--it would be to use vegan marshmallows to get them back.

As an ER nurse, frequent baker and fledgling vegan I would devour as much as I could at home! I'm thinking about using them as frostings for cakes, banana bread, maybe sprinkle some toasted coconut on top. How about tossed around with some nuts for something sweet & salty? If my daughter and I had any leftovers, which there usually are, I would share the rest with the staff at work & spread the happier vegan lifestyle!

My brother and dad recently built a fire pit in our backyard in time for summer, so I would definitely love the marshmallows to make s'mores and join in on my family's fun! I actually bought some (not home-made) vegan marshmallows a few weeks ago and was hoping to save them for a few weeks to participate in my family's many campfires at night, but when my entire (omni) family was so interested in the concept of a vegan marshmallow, I gladly let them try some- and boy, did they like them! The box was finished in about 5 minutes! So now I'm just enjoying the campfires without any sugary goodness, but some vegan marhsmallows to enjoy and wow my family even more would be great!

If I were to win these, and believe me I'd love to, as they are not available here, I'd definitely come up with something a little unusual. Of course, I love the classics, such as the vegan key lime 'cheese'cake with chocolate graham crust that I make a few times a year, and that would be delicious topped with a vanilla-scented marshmallow 'meringue', with a little flaked toasted coconut on top. As well as the ever-popular Ambrosia salad, made even more heavenly with the satisfaction of knowing it is cruelty-free. But, I have to say, as much as I would have to try those, I'd feel the nagging urge to save some so I could...'Experiment', per se. All the delicious and creative possibilities swarming through my head are making my mouth water, and if you'd be so kind as to choose me for the winner, my hollow-legged-never-ever-full-please-make-food-now boyfriend and all others I know would be happy to submit their tastebubs to me, and I will gladly post the recipe up here for others to enjoy. I am only 18, but cooking (and eating) animal-friendly cuisine is my passion, and I'm sure I can come up with a winning recipe. I'm off to go cook up a vegan storm!

If I were to win the vegan marshmallow kit, I would try to make some Peeps for two very small rug rats who were so disappointed Easter Weekend when their mom and dad took them to a vegetarian place for dinner and they had real Peeps on the plates for the kids and were clueless to what was in them. Toby (age 3) and Rosa (just one) cried and cried and I have been all over trying to find a recipe to make them to no avail. I wish I could figure out a way to use the jarred mallow I got locally but it really isn't shapeable into bunnies and chicks. Pick me maybe?

If I won these marshmallows, I'd share them with friends at home, and show them the possibilities of a vegan diet. Hopefully I'd be able to convert some of them. I would also either use them in recipes or send them to friends I volunteered with in Louisiana after the hurricanes to show how grateful I was for being turned on to my vegan lifestyle by them. If there'd be any more left, I'd hope to have some of that goodness for myself.

I would immediately make me some s'mores and some vegan rice krispy treats and since rice krispy treats are my husbands favorite snack, I would sneakingly give him some before telling him they're vegan and prove to him that vegan is still just as yummy and healthier!
Oh and I would have to make some candied yams nothing's better than sweet buttery topped with marshmallow yams or sweet potatoes!

I am living in South Korea teaching english and it has been quite a struggle to be vegan here. I have been very creative and discovered how to make my own nut milks and tofu mayo. But there has been no way to satisfy the marshmallow craving. If i win them i will have to hunt down an oven to make them in since ovens are not a common house hold item and then i think i would be too excited and just eat them plain.

As a new convert to the vegan way of life, I would use the marshmallow kit as a learning tool for my eight year old daughter who believes that this new change in our lives is the end of the world. She doesn't want to support the meat industry but is finding that it's more deeply embedded in her cupboards than at first glance. I want her to know that making a stand for the welfare of gods other creatures doesn't have to be at the cost of a normal childhood.

I'm a vegetarian, and I'm trying to go vegan. I decided I was going to try it the other day, and I have been avoiding pretty much all school foods, so I pack myself vegetables and fruits. I would love to be able to enjoy marshmallows again- I haven't had them since this winter when I found out what they have in them. Last time I ate meat by accident, I threw up because I wasn't used to eating it. So now I have vowed to go vegan for good, because the sight of those animals in cages makes me want to retch... or free them.

Marshmallows were originally made with the extract of the homonymous plant (marsh mallow)becuase they act as a gelling agent. The Egyptians squeezed sap from the mallow plant and mixed it with nuts and honey. Sadly, most commercially manufactured marshmallows now use gelatin instead of real marshmallow extract because of the expense.
With this history in mind, I will use the Vegan Marshmallow kit to make a 2000 year old treat (minus the honey of course!).
Keeping it simple is best:
Mixed Nuts, Whole Grains, some flax a little organic maple syrup and Vegan Marshmallow Mix!
I plan to take this home-made nut bars on a hike with me this spring. The natural food will fuel my body along the way:)
A perfect spring-time snack!

weird that this is going on, since i came to this site specifically to purchase vegan marshmallows. i remember them being in the peta catalog, and the ones in stores claiming to be vegetarian always have fish in them... gross! anyways, i did want them for camping ( smores), but i see that this is not a very original idea. yes, i would dip them in chocolate, too, like some others out there with good taste. i may even.. oh yes.. i'd dip them in pink and yellow sugar to make up for all of those years that i had to watch people eating my once favorite marshmallow peeps!!! i have written to the company who makes them to please remove the gelatin so i can once more get down on some peeps, but to no avail.... sorry this is not short.

I am currently writing an article for my school newspaper about vegetarianism and have already, before even publishing it, received a ton of feedback from people asking me about vegetarian and vegan lifestyles.
I promised that I would make a special vegan treat for the monthly bake sale (it raises money for the Myelin Project :]) and I think that these marshmallows would be absolutely perfect! Who knew that the most despicable snack of them all (boiled skin and bones!) could have such an animal-friendly twin!

I have a vegan friend in college who is also wheat intolerant and lactose in tolerant- he feels he can't eat anything and that his food options are very limited and boring. It would be great if i could show him that they are not so limited, and im sure he would love these as he has a particulary sweet tooth.
Please consider me.

I would give some to my niece who has recently gone veg and is going on a camp out with school and want's to roast some with the other kids. The rest I would roast at our campfire this summer.
Cheers!

As you may know, my state of Kentucky gets a bad rep for....well alot of things when it comes to animals. It's extremely hard to find vegetarian/vegan foods in such a small town, and it's even harder to live in a family and among people who are "good ole country folk" who see nothing wrong with meat being the big staple of their diet. However I've made it my mission to convert people to vegetarianism. And i've been somewhat successful, converting 2 friends from church, and my wonderful fiance to the veg lifestyle. However, I have an extreme love for cooking and I would love to not only tell people about my animal beliefs, but SHOW them that vegetarian foods can be good. Marshmallows are great for desserts, obviously, and what better way to win people over than with sugary, sweet desserts that will tempt their taste buds? I believe I could make really good use of this marshmallow kit showing people that vegetarianism is the sweetest way to live!

Well I'll be honest. I'll make them and I'll eat them.
But I'll also make my lemon tartlets and turn them into lemon meringue tartlets, thus making my carnivorous friends' mouths water. This will cause them to eat said tartlets and exclaim "why vegan baking can in fact be delicious!" they will then realize that no deprivation is necessary to live a cruelty-free life style. The word will be spread. Angel Foods will be a new eco-conglomerate (a term I've just coined) and donate plenty of money to causes that will end suffering around the world. This will start a chain reaction. People will recycle all the time. Lush green fields will be present where dust lies now. Global Warming will be a term that was only used in the past. There will be no need for diplomacy for there is no suffering. The war in Iraq will end. China will get out of Tibet. My ex-boyfriend will appologize and also get really fat (not everything is altruistic). All this because you granted me with vegan marshmallows. For the sake of the world, I suggest allowing me to make them, and then to eat them.

I'd use them for baked goods, and then pass them out at my office. I'd like our pediatric patients to know that just because they have to stop eating animal bi-products, they don't have to stop eating delicious goodies! Seriously, if you could only see their morose little faces when we say "dairy, meat, and (sometimes) gluten free"!

I am an avid baker (and a chocoholic, with wheat and gluten sensitivities/allergies - hobby and necessity are the driving forces behind my culinary endeavors -), and one of the things I do miss is not having a substitute for marshmallows, for such things like peanut butter confetti cake, as well as being able to make s'mores and banana boats over an open campfire. Recently, I was laid off from my design job (as my boss closed the business), so I have had a lot of free time to bake my vegan treats for friends and their families (economical gifts, from the heart)- winning the Angel Foods kit would be such a nice little pick-me-up, considering my lack of income at the moment. Having been vegetarian for 19 years, and vegan for the past 3 of those years, I have not had a marshmallow (or any gelatin-based food) since I was age 15. How great it would be to make such great 'comfort food' treats like crispy squares, 'dream puff' cookies, hot chocolate with marshmallows, as well as try out chocolate pies and lemon squares with a meringue topping (with advanced thanks for the inspiration)!

I'm pregnant. Us vegan pregnant ladies have an especially hard time convincing others that we're doing the smart healthy thing for our little ones.
I don't think marshmallows will necessarily prove me right to all the naysayers but it'll certainly make me happy to ignore them while eating my baked yams in marshmallows, marshmallow brownies, and of course...hot chocolate.

My 5 year old son just loves marshmallows! He often requests a serving of Jet Puffed marshmallows for dessert after dinner.
I would love to try making these for him and see if I can win him over with a vegan variety. He loves to help me in the kitchen and I enjoy teaching him about measuring and following directions. He likes to taste as we cook!
This would also be a cool and non-preachy way to talk to him more about being kind to all creatures, animals and people, and how these marshmallows are different from what is purchased at the store.

I would make my boyfriend his favorite, Lemon Meringue Pie. Of course it won't be exactly like his grandmother used to make it, but since I'm vegan(he's not, he's trying to become vegetarian) I refuse to use the recipe. Also his birthday is in June so it would rock if I both won the kit and got it in time for his birthday. If not, no biggie. I'll make him another vegan dessert, sans marshmallowy goodness.

One of the first things I learned to make for myself when I was a kid was lemon meringue pie. I thought it was nearly magic when the egg white would beat up to fluffy goodness with the addition of a touch of cream of tarter and some egg beaters in HIGH for a few minutes.
Having been vegan since 1991, I admit I've missed that kind of thing. I'll certainly make a lemon "meringue" pie with this kit when I get it, to the delight of my family & friends.
I'll also try it out a number of other ways - I bet you could use it to make a sort of vegan twinkie (light shortbread tubes with a marshmallow center)(vegans need to escape back to their childhoods too); try some brownies with a marshmallow center, and a layer of chocolate on top; hhhmmmmm . . . see how this would work with a few fun shaped cookie cutters I have to make marshmallows for s'mores this summer.
I'm sure I could dream up any number of uses for this. While I generally eat pretty healthy, wholegrains/brown rice and all that, sometimes a sweet treat is just the thing to make a day or event that much more fun.`With whole wheat pastry flour, non hydrogenated margarine and raw sugar.

I was raised with many -a-saying, one was if you cannot hear, you will feel (nice) so if I won this little piece of heaven from Angel foods I would allow my friends and other loved ones to taste (since they are unable to hear). These marshmallow delights would open their minds (and tastebuds) to the glorious and harmonious world that is vegan eating. Instead of breaking bread; we would break smores over a campfire ... YUM!

Marshmallows, much as I hate to admit it, are probably the food I've missed the most since going vegan a couple years ago, but I always remind myself that all the delicious things you can do with them still aren't enough to make up for the suffering that goes in to them. If I won the vegan marshmallows, I'd be extremely happy, probably make s'mores with my friends, maybe make some rice krispy treats, maybe make some of that lemon bar from the picture (it looks amazing)... the options are endless!

Oh Bliss! Oh Joy!
The orgasmic pleasures of rice krispie squares as they enter my mouth and tantalise my tastebuds, sending me into sensorial ecstacy....
Long having resigned myself to never again partaking of them-though taking solace in the knowledge that no animal would be killed so as to satisfy this addiction, i am over the moon with the awareness of such a kit appearing...
Friends will be able to delight in these pleasures too-we shall have 'mallow' evenings that will entail grouped orgasmic thrills...!

We live in the heart of ranch country about 1.5 hours from a grocery store. And that store doesn't exactly cater to the vegetarian much less the vegan. I am lucky to sometimes be able to get veggie burgers and soy milk. But there's nothing like living around cows to show you the destruction and push you over the edge to swearing off meat forever. So what if I might be the only one in my county, vegan marshmallows would just be the most delectable and special treat.

With Vegan Marshmellows,(along with other vegan foods) I would teach my Pathfinders (a branch of Girl Guides (which is the same as Girl Scouts) ages 12-14) about healthy eating, vegan lifestyles and vegan s'mores. Coming from a community that is heavy into hunting and fishing, veganism is somethign strange and frowned upon. It would be a great eye opening experience for these girls.

This would be a perfect gift for my daughter. She and I have been looking for vegan marshmallows and she is a vegan (I'm not but I support her) she is 16 and going to work in a health food restaurant and eventually wants to do some catering for vegans and health conscious people! I applaud her!
Now I will have to check this site for marshmallows and maybe surprise her! Her birthday is soon.

I would use this wonderful kit to make vegan marshmallows for my grandmother's famous ambrosia-like dessert, which we serve at every family dinner. Since becoming vegetarian (3 years ago), I have not had her dessert--even though it's my most favorite dessert in the world. It would be such a treat to be able to honor her memory by making the dessert with my own special touch, and, as a bonus, show my family how yummy vegan food can be! :)

smores at the cottage!
if I won these, I bet you I could get my ENTIRE family hooked on being vegetarian. I've been trying for so long, but no one will even try it. Maybe if I could show them there are tasty alternitaves, they'd consider it!
My whole family meets at the cottage every year, and every night we go down to the beach and make smores. Vegan marshmallows would be perfect!!

And all I can think of now is how much I miss roasting marshmellows over the open fire. But I promise not to shake the stick... we don't want flying flaming balls-o-goo.

My children are 6 and 11.
They miss rice krispy squares so much, that each time we go to a supermarket, they make me read the labels and they cross their fingers hoping that "gelatin" is not in the list. I have heard that there are vegan marshmallows in the United States but that's too far to travel just for vegan marshmallows. I tried to order by mail and had to cancel when I found out that the shipping costs were just too expensive. My children and I would love to win this kit and finally be able to make rice krispy treats again. Thank you for the opportunity to enter this contest.

But I am about to take the plunge and go completely vegan and my meat-eater husband is thinking of joining me! So we've been thinking of opening a vegan restaurant - there aren't too many in South Africa, in fact the only one I can think of is Earth 2.0 - and vegan marshmallows would go very well on the menu!

Next I'd be wanting to try some topping for lemon meranque - since I've been vegan for 17 years now it's been a while since I've had such a treat and it would come in pretty handy for me right now.
Thanks for helping make this possible.

Hi, first thx for this scrumptiousness full blog, I come here only from time to time (cause I have the memory of a jelly bean). If you'd accept a little French witch to win a kit here's what she'd do with it. The big deal in France is macaroons. French girls and women don't only like them, they seem to worhsip them. Look at the success of Ladurée or Pierre Hermé, both based on macaroons! They are so cute, elegant, colorful, playful, that they even appeared in the Sofia Coppola movie Marie Antoinette! They are so challenging for the skills and imagination of a cook that when I started to get really into cooking, I couldn't pass on macaroons. I have my own little plan to take over the world with brand new macaroons. One of my biggest challenge was to find a way to come up with a vegan macaroon for those delicious treats are mainly made out of meringue. I can't believe I have now a way for making one of my personnal challenges completed. So even if I don't get anything, thx for taking the time to read and sharing this awsome news about this awesome new product!

I honestly don't know what I would do with it. I am a new vegetarian, and recently have become a vegan by default. My stomach can no longer digest any dairy.
I have been experimenting with reciepes and have found quite a few that are really good. And I am figuring out that cooking and baking is actually a lot of fun.
So if I were to win the kit I suppose I would incorporate it with some desserts that I have been meaning to try.

Oh....smores! What else would I do with the marshmallows, but EAT them! I would share them with my family and friends and teach them the benefits of being a vegetarian. If they taste good enough, I might actually convince some of them to convert over the vegetarianism...whether this month or gradually over the next few months. I will also bring them to a local camp I volunteer at and show the children the wonders of animals and how, even as a child, they can become vegetarians. I feel this will help win over their heart...or rather their stomach!!!
Thanks!!!

I would gather up friends, probably at a fire pit, on the beach, and seemingly make regular smores and when they are mostly done, let them know that they are vegan and that there are alternatives that can still taste wonderful. Then if they are willing to listen, tell them about being vegetarian/vegan and the effects on the animals we eat. Especially the poor farm animals, namely chickens.

My kids like putting the marshmallows in the microwave for about 30 seconds so they puff up really big. Then they shrink back down and are super sticky but they just love doing that.

This is my unofficial petition against "I'd make s'mores" and "Mmm, crispy treats" as 'original' ideas! Please, people, we all have imaginations, so USE them! Through this contest, we are trying to show that vegans can have a plethora of diverse food choices, and that we are not in fact limited in our selections, that cruelty-free options are not only healthier, but they can taste just as great - WithOUT the guilt! Enough of the neverending, redundant entries about s'mores! Please people, have a look around. You can be inspired by anything and everything you see. Walking through a garden, the grocery store, anything! Everywhere is potential inspiration to create something original, unique, and tasty! How about whole grain waffles, pancakes, or crepes topped or filled with fresh summer berry compote and almond-vanilla marshmallow creme, with chopped toasted nuts? How about sweet potato, carmelized onion, barley and butternut squash stew with a swirl of melted marshmallow on top? Or home-made green tea, almond, and vanilla marshmallow swirl ice cream sandwiches? Fluffy pina colada marshmallow custards? Experimenting with friends or family to see who can come up with the best "creme brulee" using marshmallow and a variety of other ingredients instead of the cholesterol-laden, cruel animal products? Anything but another entry listing s'mores and crispy treats! Use your imagination, you'd be surpirised at what you can come up with from only a small knowledge of basic kitchen tools, some inspiration, and of course - The vegan marshmallows that I hope are on their way to my kitchen! Good luck with your (original!) ideas everyone! :)

Hi Rosanne!
Marshmallows typically contain gelatin which is made from boiled animal bones, skin, cartilage, etc.
You can find out more about gelatin alternatives here: http://www.vegcooking.com/vegcooking-gelatinalt.asp.
Hope that helps!

My family and I go on campouts often, and we do miss the s'mores. Last time we tried making them with the marshmallow fluff (not vegan, but vegetarian), but it is just not the same. I want to make them and share them with the non-vegetarians who go with us. I am slowly trying to convert my cousins (they like a lot of the stuff I make).

You can now make your own successful vegan marshmallows at home.
My recipe uses agar agar and soy protein isolate. Soy protein isolate is what the commercial makers use.
The link below will take you to the recipe. Now you will be able to S'mores and rocky road and many other marshmallow delights.
