It was a pleasant surprise when I received an e-mail a couple of weeks ago from VegNews magazine offering up a free gift pack for a contest on this blog. VegNews is the first magazine about vegetarianism that I remember seeing in "normal" stores, and it looked just like all the other "normal" magazines. Something about that was quite comforting to a vegetarian teenage girl (me). At first I didn't know any other vegetarians, so seeing an entire magazine about my lifestyle—and in full color with glossy pages, no less—made me realize that I was not alone.
That's exactly why I'm happy to offer up the VegNews gift pack as a prize to one of my lucky readers. The pack includes the magazine's signature oversized tote bag, six jumbo vegan cookies, a copy of the current issue of VegNews, and a one-year subscription! Entering is easy. Just leave a short comment below telling me why you deserve to win the gift pack, and I will choose the best answer. That's it!
Details, details: We will be giving away one VegNews gift pack. The contest ends on April 18, and the winner will be notified by April 25. And just so you know…by giving us your details here, we're taking that as acknowledgment that you've read and agreed to our privacy policy. And by commenting, you are agreeing to the following terms and conditions.
Good luck!

I think I should win the VegNews Gift Pack. First of all, my family are brand new vegetarians, and are still trying to figure everything out. The magazine would help us out a lot there. Secondly, the winner will be notified 1 day before my birthday. This would make a wonderful birthday gift to me!!

So, I asked for a subscription to veg news for my birthday last year and specifically mentioned that fabulous package because I really wanted the tote and cookies. Unfortunately, I got the subscription, but NO tote and cookies. I don't know how it happened, maybe my family member didn't order it correctly. So I've been missing that subscription package since August. :(

Hi Amy,
I think that I should win because I am a typical vegan male - huge fan of food, but massive fan of vegan junk food like cookies and I have a huge aappetite, so the 6 cookies would suffice as a nice appetizer for me.
I also am a huge supporter of PETA and hope that an Australian branch will open soon.

I am starting a new chapter in my life. I am getting treated for ADD, to take hold of my life, and becoming vegan, to take charge of my health. I am new to this and could use helpful tips from this magazine as well as an intro to the new culture/community of established vegetarians to give me an example to learn from. In addition, I am horrified by the truths about meat/poultry/dairy's origins and environmental impact. I would love to contribute indisputable facts and realisms, when asked of my sudden change in diet, to open the minds of the people in my life to the difference each of us can make in not only personal health, but also, the health of the planet.

I'm not sure if this contest applies to people residing outside of the U.S., but I think it should if it doesn't. As a Peace Corps Volunteer in a country that I'm still getting accostumed to, I could definately use a taste of home. Literally! The cookies, an amazing magazine written in English (not to mention with recipes I would be able to incorperate into my ever so interesting kitchen arrangement), and a great tote! I love the tote..I am always carrying around some resusable bag to carry mine and my baby's random amount of things around and I would love to really be able to show off that i am Vegan! I really just want to tell everyone I see but i wait for the oppurtunity when someone asks why i eat the way I eat and then i am able to explain to them I am vegan and why but carrying a tote around that says VegNews will really shout it out for me too!! And I WANT a vegan cookie!!!! Those cookies look delicious and i wouldn't mind indulging in something delicious without any animal products!!!

well i am a vegetarian for 7 months now. i have obtained many vegie cookbooks and have lots of learning to do. i have never heard of your mag but it seems like it would be a great resource for me. i currently subscribe to veg times and i love it but sometimes the recipes are hard to complete as i have a very limited income. i live in northern MI and believe me!!! there are not many vegetarians up here. i need ideas to help me and also to spread the word to others i know that need some convincing that eating animals is not only bad for them but also bad for the environment. it would help if i had more actual info printed in a magazine so i could show them that i am spreading not only my words but words that are printed in a magazine that is produced and sold. it is hard to convince people in northern MI that we do not need to eat animals to survive so i need all the ammo i can get to try to educate people in a way that does not seem that i am imposing my beliefs on them but actually giving them information that they can use to make an educated choice. thank you

Im new to being a vegetarian, by choice. I decided i wanted a change in my life style and the way our world treats these poor animals that should be able to live free and in a good enviroment. To me its more of taking a stand for what i, myself believe in. For me i have alot of animals and it hurts me alot to know and i have seen too how they treat animals. Tourchue. The way they are killed too(troat slit). Like it makes me feel great to have the will power to not eat these, living and breaking animals i love so much. Expecially horses. I think that horse slaughter should be stop immediately. Im trying to help put a stop to that too. But yah we need a change in this world, because at this rate we need to take care of this planet, because its not just my home, its yours too. So do u want to see the world go down the drain, or start helping in anyways like turning off lights, going veg, helping out at animal slaughter prevention organizations its all up too you to make a difference in the beautiful place we all call home.

I'd love to win the VegNews gift pack because I'm a fairy new vegan - it will be one year by June. I feel pretty isolated in that I'm the only vegan in my family and I don't know many vegans in my community. Heck, I can't even find VegNews in any local magazine shops or stands! VegNews (those issues I have bought online) makes me feel connected to the larger veg community and keeps me informed on events, recipes, veg businesses and more. Oh, and I love ABC cookies but the closest place that sells them are on the opposite side of town and are usually stale, so it's pretty hit-or-miss.

I came across the Peta.org website after participating in Earth Hour. Although Earth Hour was not mentioned on our local new cast in El Paso, Texas, I sent an e-mail out to all my contacts asking them to participate. After doing this I read about the environmental footprint we each make on our planet. To my surprise, an animal based diet has a major impact on our planet. From there I began to research vegetarian diets and decided to take a challenge to follow a vegetarian diet/lifestyle for 30 days. This all happen in the span of a couple of days. I am beginning to realize, as I am sure others are as well, that everything we do has an impact on our planet. By watching the online videos of tortured animals I decided that enough is enough. Ignorance is not bliss. I must educate myself now. Pretending animals are not suffering or we are not affecting our planet in a negative manner does not stop it from happening. My eyes have been opened and I am eager to learn more.
Thank you.

My 11 year old daughter has been vegetarian for 6 years! And just helping shop and cook for her recently has convinced me and my 17 year old daughter that vegetarian and compassionate eating is going to be our choice too. This gift pack you are offering is a great way for us to getting started to a new way of eating and thinking. I was a vegetarian for several years and have been a vegan for a few months now. VegNews has become an addiction. Sad thing is, the one place that carries the magazine actually stows it away in a drawer UNDER the magazine rack (I'll leave out the name of the store, but let's just say it's a popular chain). Every time I try to get my fix, I have to nag a salesperson to get it for me. They show me where they hide it an actually tell me I'm not allowed to dig it out. Oh, and my birthday is the 23rd, so that would be a great gift (hint, hint)!

I also have friends that I feel are already curious about my veg cause, and I am hoping that I could open some minds with a new copy of Veg News every month, as well as handing out all the delicious cookies. Those really are the best vegan cookies that I have ever had... I think that my friends and family should know how delicious going veg can be! I believe I should win because living on the island of Guam, being vegetarian can be hard. Since becoming a vegetarian when I was 13 (I'm now 17), it was a bit difficult being a vegetarian on an island where it's a rare lifestyle. While I've been successful, I feel having the subscription would act as a monthly support, especially with the news updates and recipes.

Why I think I should win... Well, I have been a Vegan for 5 years now, since I was thirteen and I live in Northeast Nebraska(aka: smack dab in the middle of beef country) I have been fighting animal cruelty with protests and petitions since I first became a Vegan and still fight it today with protests and petitions. Every time someone finds out I'm a Vegan it pretty much turns into a very long argument on how its going to affect my health in a negative way. Everyone thinks Vegan food is disgusting and lacking in the proper nutrients. I've already proven some people wrong, but the more information and the more delicious recipes I have, the more I'll be equipped to handle all these "meat, potato, and vegetable" eating people!

I spend hours searching out new meal ideas, baked goods, veg information, and support. Most of the time I dedicate to this is during work hours, so not only would I love this, but my bosses would appreciate it, as well! This would seriously allow me to allocate some more time to doing business-related activities!

I grew up on a farm and as a result, developed a deep relationship with the earth and animals that has only grown over the years. Yet, when I was still a child living on this farm, I one day found out that we consumed the animals I loved so much. Once I realized that, it didn't take long for me to give up meat, even to the portest of my mother who is also my best friend. Although it put me off for a short time, I realized, it wasn't about her, and it wasn't about me (though I couldn't have morally continued to eat meat and live with myself) - I had to do it for the animals. Since then, I have been a proud vegetarian, and an activist, constantly looking to grow as one, and as a person through my choice(s), and ways to advocate these choices, hoping to help others change their lives for the better-as it definately has changed my life for the better. I am 21m and have now been a vegetarian for 8 years this summer. Winning this, would kind of be like a celebration of one of the best decisions I have ever made :) Plus, I am always looking for great vegetarian recipe's to cook for my family and to share with my friend(s). Either way, thank you so much for this site!! I am so grateful for this - I feel like I hit the jackpot!

I think I should win the gift pack because, I have been a vegetarian for 3 years, I am currently working to become a vegan. I live in the south around a lot of animal breeders and meat eaters. In my town, I am one of the only people with this lifestyle. True story. I would love anything to help me with putting it out there and everything else.

Im not sure that i deserve to win the gift pack more than anyone else, there are some pretty amazing comments here, but in the intrest of really wanting it here is my story. i was raised eating meat and always felt really guilty about it, i could never come to terms with killing other sentient beings for food when there are alternatives. i recently made the choice to follow my heart and became a vegetarian, i live with my life partner and her brother and it was a family choice that we are all doing together. in addition i have made up informational flyers about becoming a vegetarian for the sake of compassion to our fellow creatures and saving our planet from the harmful pollutants caused by meat farming, and i have posted them on the community boards at my school and my apartment complex. if i were to win your lovely prize it would not only benefit me but also my family and it would be a helpful rescource for helping anyone who sees my flyers and wants more information.

Vegetarianism. A lifestyle that I am now choosing to live by. I'm a teenager of 14 years of age and at first, I wasn't a vegetarian at all, and to be honest...I still eat meat, but just today, my friend told me about www.meat.org and the video it showed. I went on the site and watched it. I was mortified! The video brought innumerable tears to my eyes. And these tears were not tears of pity, but tears of utter discontent and disenchantment. I had no idea that that was what all the animals had to go through to provide food for us humans. Altough I am a human, I now despise the human race because of what we do to animals just for our own satisfaction. And yes, the animals provide food for us, but what do we give them in return?! Death, thats what we give them and even before the death comes, they aren't even treated fairly and able to live a life that an animal should live. The torture that they [animals] go through, the inummerable hours of never ending pain, and just for what?! A smile on our faces? To take up place on our plates?! It is ridiculous to see that we, even though we call ourselves nice and caring, we are evil and dispicable for killing these poor innocent animals. And from this point on, I am turning vegan. Strict vegan because I do not, I repeat do not support the killing of animals for human satisfaction. I've never heard of this magazine until I went on www.meat.org, and as a begining vegan, I feel that this magazine with its many vegan recipes and and encouragement to keep me on track and standing up for what i believe in can help me and many others live up to my standards. And with the help of this magazine's motivational words to make a vegetarian strive to make a statement about vegetarianism; I feel that I am able to do the same wether it be in my school, my family, a local town center, or even the nation. This magazine could do wonders for me to help spread the words of the what the costs are to bring meat onto our plates. Animals don't have a voice to put out there and protect themselves, and that's why I'm willing to lend my voice to them and help them [animals] make an impact on this worlds food pyramid...and this magazine can help. I'm most sure of it, even if it only impacts a small minority, the minority is the majority if you give it a chance to get out there. Thanks for reading!

I feel that i deserve this free packet because my decision to become a vegetarian was not an easy one. I wanted to, dont get me wrong and felt that the treatment of animals was wrong. But I was raised in a meat eating house where every holiday and family meal, meat is being served. Also, with a single Dad growing up, I basically lived off fast food and deli subs. Actually cutting meat out of my life, was going to be huge. But I decided to give it a try anyway, the more i read about the treatment of these animals the less appealing the meat on my plate looked. I know that by not eating meat the slaughter houses are not going to shut down and that animals will still be hunted for their fur. But it is something that I have decided to not be a part of, and that means something to me.

Hello!!
I think everyone on this site deserves this gift package, but I'll tell you why I want it: my younger brother (13) is thinking of following in my footsteps and becoming a veggie, but our mom is freaked out worrying about him going veg so young ("But how will he get his PROTEIN??"). Apparently my shining good health is not enough of a testimonial, so I would love to present my mother with this gift pack (I admit I'll keep a cookie for myself!) so that she can see how healthy, happy, and all around wonderful vegans are and stop hindering my brother in his choice! Thanks for reading and thanks for your amazing blog!

I would love to win this gift pack...I have never seen this magazine anywhere before but it looks wonderful! I don't know any vegetarians either, and my entire family is strictly meat and potatoes... and the potatoes are a rarity..so I get teased mercilessly! It would be nice to just be able to escape in my own little vegetarian world once in a while! Thanks so much! -Rebekah

The veganized mac & cheese recipe in Feb's issue changed my life. I've been vegan for 1.25 years...but still get cravings for some of my old favorites. The search continues for awesome veganized buffalo wings! Your blog and veg news are great places to start. (Plus, it's 3PM and I'm sitting in my cubicle dying for one of those cookies! If only you could award me the prize now:))

After discovering that my 15 month old was having a reaction to milk (congestion, sleeping problems, breathing issues and so on), I did some research on dairy. What I found astounded me! From there, I branched out further and saw what was happening to those poor animals (ignorance is bliss I guess). I immediately stopped eating meat! Still working on cutting dairy out of my diet. I am now raising my son as a vegan. Unfortunately, I am having a harder time convincing my husband! I am always trying to find recipes that will help him realize that vegetarianism meals can be just as tasty, if not more so.
