Vegans can sleep well at night knowing that they're not missing out on the strange snack that is jerky, now that there are many meatless varieties on the market—one being the Slim Jim-esque Primal Sticks.
The long, skinny, tubular, individually wrapped "meat" sticks remind me so much of their distant cousin that I can even hear "Macho Man" Randy Savage's voice growling away in my head. And that's not surprising, since Primal Spirit—the company that makes both Primal Sticks and Primal Strips—believes that "a meat alternative product should be completely satisfying to both vegetarian and non-vegetarian diners. Doing that requires that a product have the texture and great flavor of real meat."
Whether you're a meatless-jerky lover or, even better, highly skeptical of this meatless wonder, now is your chance to win some Natural Smoked Flavor Primal Sticks. Three lucky winners will each receive one box containing 24 sticks to gnaw on. To win your free box, just leave a quick comment below sharing a little something about your favorite faux-meat product—whether it's a prepackaged, frozen item or one you make at home. The three most interesting comments win.
The contest ends on March 14, and the winner will be notified by March 21.

I love tofu "fish" sticks. I tend to use this recipe by tofu-n-sprouts: http://tofu-n-sproutz.blogspot.com/2008/02/my-kids-still-get-craving-for-those.html
It is really delicious, and hits that greasy-fried foods spot for me, sans the mercury.

I love those Morningstar Farms Meal Starters steak style strips. I never ate much meat growing up, but my dad cooked a mean steak. It was Asian style, with soy sauce, salt and pepper. It was pretty much the only thing he could cook, but his steak was amazing with a bowl of white rice. Every once in a while, I get a craving for that flavor, and these seitan strips, with some soy sauce, taste JUST like the steak he used to make. Sure, they're a little expensive, and sure, they're processed, but every once in a while I just have to have some steak strips and rice and relive my childhood!

Well, I don't have an interesting story about faux-meat products. Since going vegan 2 years ago, my wife and I have rediscovered the flavor of all things plant. We have even cut back dramatically on tofu as a filler. As the main cook at home, I do not, in the least, miss preparing meat.
I did recently discover seitan at a restaurant, though. I had previously thought the devil was in the details, but apparently he is in this meat substitute.
My two children have, by way of association, become vegan as well (mostly). They understand the health benefits, so it wasn't necessarily a hard sell. However, if my son could have only ONE meat product back, it would be jerky. I would be a hero if a box of "jerky" showed up at my door.

My favorite faux - meat product is soon to be Natural Smoked Flavor Primal Sticks, at least I hope. I have been a veggie for over a decade now and really don’t eat much faux meat anymore. But one of the few meat items I have always missed was jerky! I never have seen faux jerky, and now that I have found out it exists I am filled with excitement for faux Jerky. The thought of ripping into my first Natural Smoked Flavor Primal Stick fills my mouth with euphoric anticipation. Please select me as one of the winners since I have no idea where I could find them in my area.

My favorite are the soy chicken nuggets that Earth Fare sells by the pound. They are not shaped like your ordinary (and I would submit highly processed and therefore scary) chicken nuggets, so their blobby and pimpled appearance keep their goodness secret. The taste and texture are amazing, and my omnivore acquaintances approve. They are too good, in fact, to spoil with heating or sauces, and I eat them straight out of the fridge. Yum.

Oh my goodness!!! I've been a vegitarian for over 3 years now and I still miss slim jims. Most people I know think they are the most disgusting thing, but I loved them. I can't wait to try these (for free?)!
So here is my favorite fake meat per the contest requirements- boca burger vegi crumbles. They are great in my mom's chili recipe that I modified. Yum.

Gosh, there are so many and I love every one I've tried. I don't agree with those people who shun faux meat products, claiming they're only intended for new vegetarians. I've been veg for 13 years, and I still love, love, love fake meat.
My favorite is probably Light Life Gimme Lean sausage. I actually developed a new recipe using it last night. Here goes:
"Sausage" Sage Soymilk Gravy
2 cups soymilk
1/2 roll Gimme Lean, cooked and crumbled
1/3 cup whole wheat pastry flour
1 tsp. chopped fresh sage
1/2 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. salt
fresh ground pepper, to taste
Combine soymilk, flour, and spices in a saucepan. Heat on medium heat, stirring constantly until mixture thickens (about 5 minutes). Stir in Gimme Lean and serve over vegan whole wheat biscuits.

In general, my favorite fake meat products are the Primal Strips as a snack and Gardenburger's Meatless Riblets. Those are great on toast with lettuce, all dolled up, or just great by themselves. However, the best faux-meat product I ever had was 'lupin,' which I ate quite a lot of while living in France. It's a great source of protein with a texture similar to seitan, but even more versatile.
In general, I save money by making my own seitan at home. I sometimes follow the traditional recipe (the salty/soy sauce version), but have also manipulated it a bit to make a sort of "maple glazed" faux meat. Good stuff!

I just started my new vegan ifestyle about a month ago and I have found it easy to do, but hard at the same time. I'm the only vegan in my entire family, I love to cook and I cook daily for my husband and daughter, and it is very hard in the area that I live at (plus my budget!) to find vegan alternatives such as egg replacer so I have learned to work with what I got. My favorite faux-meat product so far have been the all famous Vegan Boca burgers!! And let me tell you I've tried others and I have to say Boca is the absolute best!!
What I do is make my boca burger as my meat for our family meals and pretty much try to season it the same. For example, I added barbecue sauce and made me a barbecue (I made sure it was vegan!) sandwhich! OH SO YUMMY! I've added Montreal Steak Seasoning to make it like a steak and lightly fried it in a little oil in a small skillet! Yummy too!! And I have yet to try so many more dressings such as a good vegan homemade teriyaki sauce, marinaded then "sauted" with onions and garlic!
Same goes for some good marinated grilled portabello mushrooms! They are just as yummy as a burger too!
And wanna know the funniest part, before I was even a vegan..I didn't even like burgers! I only ate em when I had too when there was nothing else to eat!

I looooooooooved jerky as a kid. Little did I realize then that I was a vegan in the making since I abhored any animal products that actually looked like animals or had icky parts like veins, fat, and blood. Consequently, I would only eat highly-processed meat like jerky. I loved jerky so much that once for Valentine's Day my mom bought a big giant heart-shaped box full of chocolates. She removed the chocolate and filled the box with jerky! I was in heaven and I ate jerky for months.
I've been vegetarian now for over 18 years and I always missed jerky. I'd tried many fake jerky brands over the years but they were either too hard, too dry, too flavorless, or too greasy. Then I found Primal Strips jerky at my local food co-op and I did the cabbage patch while I sang "Primal Strips, are bringin' jerky back, yeah bringin' jerky back!" The Primal Strips made from seitan are my faves since I try not to overdo it on soy (they also have some made from mushrooms that I haven't tried yet because I love my Thai Lime flavor so much : ). Primal Strips are so awesome that the only way they could make them better is if they sold them in a bigger bulk pack. (I know they have the multi-strip pack but it's too little. I think they have sorely underestimated the girth of my love for jerky.)
I'm really excited about the Primal Stix since I also looooooved Slim Jims disgusting meat and chemical combos in a handy thin plastic sheath! I never dreamed I'd get to eat anything similar again. But, I'm prepared to do the dance again..."Primal Stix, are bringin' meat stix back, yeah bringin' meat stix back!" Ahhhh, life is good for a happy vegan. Now I can have the best of both worlds thanks To Primal Stix– a clear conscience in my head, and faux meat-stix in my hand! It truly is a day worth celebrating!

So to keep it short(ish) and sweet and hopefully win some tasty jerky I'll attempt to pick a favorite fake meat out of the MANY amazing options.... though in all honesty I think the "meat" choice depends on the event and/or craving!
-grilling= tofurky sun dried tomato brat's
-fried goodness= lightly flour/salt/pepper tofu slices and pan fry in olive oil, serve with braggs/tamari sauce
-tofu can even be made into a dessert- saute with apples, sugar and cinnamon until the sugar caramelizes!
-and locally made tempeh to replace meat in anything!

The one thing that reminds me of summer is a hot dog with chili and drippy cheese. So messy you were forced to sit outside on the porch to eat it, with the dog as the vacuum cleaner to get what you might have dropped.
Now-a-days with meat no longer in my system I like to recreate my childhood with Morningstar Farms Veggie Dogs (grilled of course!) and chili made with their meal starter crumbles. Melt down the cheese of your choice, and head outside...this time your dog will get a healthier and just as delicious snack to vacuum up...if you don't get it all first! =D

I have been a vegetarian for over 20 years and a vegan for two years. I was given a recipe for Tofu jerky from the 'How it All Vegan' cookbook and started making it years ago. I was constantly getting requests for the tasty treats and the recipe from my meat eating friends. I would be interested to see if your product were as good as the home made version which takes 24 hours of marinating and approx. eight hours in a low oven to dry.

You just pop them in the microwave with a baked potatoe and the fastest most delicious meal you will ever have. Just throw some margerine and some soy sour cream on there and wa-la you have your self and delicious meal. Julia has the right idea too. Yum veggie chili and cheese dog. I have been a vegetarian since I was 14 (now 63). I am thrilled with all the new faux meat products on the market these days. My family loves Tofurky slices and the roast. It comes with a "jerky style" wish bone which I love. I hope the new veggie "jerky" is similar.Life has become much more simple for me since vegetarianism has become popular. I used to have to make faux meats from scratch for my family. I live in Nova Scotia and not alot faux meats are available up here.I am seriously considering opening a Veggie food store in my area. Most health food stores here carry mostly vitamins. Faux meat is minimal in the grocery stores. The 7th Day Adventist Church sells some foods, but only once a month for 1 hour which makes it difficult.

All varieties of Primal Strips make a delicious, nutritious quick grab-a-lunch. One of my favorite tofu dishes is butcher fingers. I cut extra-firm into strips and then bread them in Shake-n-Bake. They neither bleed nor cry and are yummy. If carnivores can have chicken fingers we can enjoy butcher fingers!

I must say that i love making recipes that completely contradict the slimy disgusting tofu steryotypes that people have in their mind about the flavorless white block. My favorite recipe by far is just taking tofu, chopping it up very small, sautee it with salt, pepper, taco seasoning, any veggie of your choice (i like peppers and onions) and serving it up with a corn tortilla, lettuce, tomatoes, vegan sour cream, and salsa. I find my mouth watering now just thinking about it.....

My husband has become the reluctant vegan.
I told him I would make dinner, but it would include my pseudo-meats, and vegan ingredients. He agreed to eat the meals, but they had to taste like 'man food'.
He actually enjoys some of the dishes I cook for him: (He has done 'just enough' research to have picked up bits and pieces of veg cuisine) His favorite is something he refers to as 'Boof Trees', which is a vegan cheeseburger macaroni (again, he knows just enough to know that fake meats usually have names that replace a letter, or rhyme with the actual meat - and he gets the 'trees' from hearing me say 'Chreese'). Another winner is barbecued tofu with Mexican rice (man food).
I guess though I have to say our favorite faux meat is probably, by default, Seitan - Billy thinks the name is hilarious, and laughs every time I say it.
He often requests that I cook him "some of that devil chicken with the 'taters".
** I've tried the Primal Strips (they're great), but never the long skinny ones - I bet those would qualify as 'man food' - and get him away from the slim jims! **

I didn't really care for real jerky before I became vegan, however since being vegan for some strange reason I really crave the stuff. Oddly enough I also crave the most random things such as faux chicken nuggets, some serious good fried tofu, or a good old nice tall glass of soy milk. Which is completely odd because I never craved a thing before I went vegan, well except for your occasional cookie or cake craving, which I still get and have renewed my love for vegan sweets. There is nothing more magical than creating something that is vegan and yet can fool all those "normal" (that's what my family calls themselves) people. OH YUM!!

Hi. I wanted to share with everyone how good meatloaf could be if you left out the animal ingredients. Mix a bag of Lightlife crumbles, a roll of Lightlife Meatball mix (replaces need for egg yolks), make some fresh bread crumbs (1/2 cup or so), cut up some garlic (a few cloves), Italian green peppers (at least one whole), sweet onion (1/2 or more), olive oil (at least a 1/4 cup), Veggie beef bouillon cube (CelifibR is great) w/ water (as directed on box), liquid smoke (one or two cap fulls: it is quite potent), Cajun seasoning, Italian seasoning, salt, pepper (anything else you may think adds flavor), and bake in a loaf pan for 1 1/2 to 2 hours at around 350. You can fill the pan with a veggie soup base (if you don't mix in the bouillon and water mix) and watch it all get absorbed, moist and tender. A good tip is to use a turkey baster and keep on injecting the loaf with more soup. It is a bit of work, but very worth the effort. It is fake meat comfort food at its best. My roommate who hates all vegetarian food has requested that I make this on a few occasions now. Just serve with Mashed potatoes and some corn!

Two items I love, but are hard to locate, Garden Gourmet ( not Garden Burger ) veggie burgers, you see the pieces of vegetable sticking out of them, they are made in Israel, maybe that explains why they are so hard to find. The other one is Franklin Farms portobello hotdogs. FF is a popular mushroom distributor around my area, the NYC vicinity, and stop n shop used to cary them, but no more. the secret to cooking them, as with all veg dogs is to steam them over chili and then serve them on nice buns with good mustard and fresh minced onion. Tofurky Italian sausage has also fooled more than one of my non-veg friends too. This is a great posting, I am taking notes on what everyone else eats and am going to be trying some new stuff, and after 12 yrs veg that's a plus, and bless that gal from Nova Scotia a veg for what 49 yrs? You go babe, and let us know if you start a store, we'll be sure to drop in if and when we're in them parts. peace all joe jacovino

like alot of people, i don't really have a funny story, i'd just like to win some 'jims. when i became a vegetarian years ago, i would crack up at the names of stuff-"fakin' bacon, tofu pups, smart dogs." i can't even remember them all now. but my favorite meal would have to be broiled portabello mushrooms with A1 sauce, french fries with ketchup and good old (soy) buttered white bread. that meal brings back memories of my childhood favorite meal, except back then, the mushroom was of course a big T-bone steak. my specialty is making vegan versions of old family favorites, like halupki (cabbage rolls), hot sausage with peppers and onions, etc. i have fooled many a meat eater. it's hilarious!! they have NO idea. anyway, if i don't win, i'll probably order some. thanks

My favorite faux-meats so far are Boca Crumbles (I put them in chili and spaghetti sauce), original Boca Burgers (closest to the real thing I've tasted) and Morningstar Farms Chik'n Nuggets (just like the ones my grandmother made!). For something a little more exotic, I like the Morningstar Sundried Tomato and Basil Burgers (though it does have some mozzarella in it, so be forewarned), just plain on a plate with a fork! I do want to try the grilled chik'n strips and steak strips. My husband, who is still an omnivore, makes a beef and broccoli stir-fry, and I want him to make some with the Morningstar steak strips for me! I REALLY want to try the jerky on him, too, since so far he likes the Boca chili and spaghetti I make him!

Quorn products are made of out mycoprotein which is from mushrooms, and man then texture and the flavor are totally perfect! they make fake chicken and turkey products, and their meatballs are to die for! The only place that I've found Quorn (and where I discovered it) is at Whole Foods. try it!

I've been a vegetarian since I was 7 and am nearly 100% vegan. I have 4 children all of whom I am raising as near vegans. My 2 oldest were converts and enjoy some "faux" meat products and so does my new husband (also newly converted). I however, do not consume any of them because I grew up not ever eating any meat or fake meat, so my diet is all plant based and looks that way! I'm not a big proponent of the psychological concept of "faux" meat since it seems to apply that "meat" is any kind of dietary requirement and if abstaining from that, you need some kind of replacement. This is not true. However, converts (esp my hubbie) need those "faux" meat products to quell their cravings and prevent them from slipping. With that said, I go simple and use TVP with all kinds of seasonings/sauces to make everything from Sloppy Joes to meatloaf. My hubbie loves Seitan used in good old southern greens recipes and my son will eat everything the Quorn company makes. In fact, I need to buy stock in that company since so much of my money goes there! I would love to get these to give my husband. We have a hard time finding too many vegan products in our area and with 5 kids, expenses can be pretty tight.

I have to say that my favorite is my homemade seitan roast. I use the recipe from Vegan Vittles. This roast is so versitle. Meal 1 was roast with mashed potatoes and gravy. Meal 2 BBQ "beef" (made from leftover roast)over potatoes with broccoli. Meal 3, Good old "Roast Beef" sammies on homemade 9 grain bread with vegan mayo, lettuce, and tomato. Meal 4 comforting "Meatloaf" from Vegan Vittles using, Yes, left over roast along with country potatoes, corn and broccoli. Hands down, Vegan Vittles recipe for "roast beef" wins our hearts.

My fave fake meat product is Smart Dogs! You just can't beat them for great flavor and texture. They really hit the spot and taste great with all the typical toppings such as suateed onions, sauerkraut, relish, mustard and anything else including vegan chili! Yummy!

There is nothing better than seitan in terms of versatility! I have made seitan chicken pot pie, seitan stroganoff, seitan parmigiana, and last week, I had seitan scallopini with a lemon caper sauce. Delicious! I pretty much try to take all of my old favorites from my pre-veg days and make them veg, so I have found seitan is really the best substitute.

Before I went vegetarian, I used to love getting up in the morning and making huge batches of biscuits, sausage gravy, eggs, etc...I have always been a breakfast person. Since realizing eggs and sausage does not a humane meal make, I've become a vegan "sausage gravy" addict. As a musician, I'm totally excited to see vegan jerky, because when I'm on the road with my band I can't help but miss eating slim jims in the van.

I have recently gone vegetarian and I really have not missed meat yet. I did for health reasons and hope that by my birthday in May to be completely vegetarian. I have been cooking a lot for my boyfriend and he has liked everything and even thought that Morningstar's ground "beef" was real meat till I told him. He loves jerky and this could be a great way to show him how easy it is to go vegetarian too. I love him regardless but it'd be nice if he shared this same passion.

True to my Southern roots, I grew up on fried chicken. While my veg transition back in November was seamless, I do crave this ubiquitous comfort food every now and then.
However, my inventive creation of chicken and waffles using my favorite faux meat product, Morning Star Chik'N Strips, puts white meat to shame. Here's the recipe...
Ingredients:
Egg
Morning Star Chik'N Strips
Cooking Oil
Flour
Waffles
Soak several strips of chik'n in an egg for a couple of minutes. Batter the chik'n strips with seasoned flour and lightly fry in your oil of choice (I use Smart Choice) until golden and crispy.
Pair with waffles. If you don't have the time or resources to make homemade waffles, I recommend Kashi's Honey Oat Waffles. Drizzle the chicken and waffles with honey and enjoy a gourmet meal in the comfort of your own home.

I use either MorningStar Veggie Chik'n strips/nuggets/patties or meal starters and make Pineapple chik'n. I love the citrus flavor of it, i also enjoy orange chik'n, pineapple-orange chik'n, and lemon chik'n. I bake the chik'n some times right in the marinade, to soak in the flavor, or bake it alone to get crisp. I add ginger, soy sauce, pineapple/orange/lemon juice, some spices to taste. I make rice on the side, and fresh veggies with it. it looks and tastes great!
I also enjoy the chik'n "plain", on a sandwich, or dunk the nuggets in sauce. I love MorningStar veggie burgers, sometimes with vegan cheese and or Morningstar bacon. or smart bacon. I love the Smart deli meat on sandwiches.
I love smart ground beef, and make tacos with the mix stuff you can buy. mmmm...
and of course, i love my fruits and veggies!
I really hope i can get a chance to try these Primal Sticks!

My favorie meatless items are the Publix meatless crumbles and the Boca meatless crumbles. I normally don't cook that much but I am learning. I have been on the kick of making meat and cheese quesadillas. I use Jalepeno tortilla shells, if anybody is from Texas and has been to the HEB grocery store you know what I am talking about. My parents live in TX and everytime they come visit me I tell them to bring me some. I also, like the quorn and morningstar products.

It's a hard choice for me between Morningstar Farms faux chicken nuggets and Trader Joe's new faux beef strips. I love the chicken nuggets dipped in some melted Earth Balance and hot sauce and eaten just like buffalo chicken nuggets. YUM! But then again, the beef strips are so much like real meat, I kept checking the package to make sure I hadn't picked up the wrong thing by accident! Even my husband, who is a meat eater, looked at them and told me that if I gave him them for dinner, he didn't think he would know they weren't meat. I don't miss many things since becoming a veggie; however, I do think about a slim jim now and then and would love to try this product!

I'm all about Morningstar Farms' vegan meat crumbles. I'm really lazy when it comes to cooking - I'm a microwave guy - but once in a while I'll sautee a bag of those bad boys up with some veggies, boil a pound of pasta, and douse the whole thing in rich marinara sauce. Oh yeah! Gives me enough good eats for several days (and my microwave gets a good workout).

Our favorite faux-meat product would be Italian Style vegan sausages -- made at home. They taste even better after all four girls add their helping hands to the process. =)

(Cause BATMAN is a veg! or at least the latest reincarnation playing him is *wink wink*)
I've been meat and cruelty free for over 10+ years now. And I spend time trying to figure out what meat-like product I may be missing, and then attempt to duplicate them in non-cruel and ever so tasty ways. I have converted at least 3 people to the veg lifestyle with my cooking. And it is usually with the most basic things, like vegetarian tacos, chili, and sloppy joes. People’s flabbergasted (I just like that word I think) reactions are my favorite when they learn such yummy main dishes can be made without anyone losing a life. So thus far my favorite meatless-cannot-live-without item is:vegan Boca crumbles, for their versatility.
The last things on my list that I haven't been able to find that satisfies the "missing meat" feelings completely are: Cuban ropa vieja, and ...you guessed it: BEEF JERKY!
I’m not above groveling. Did I say please? PLEASE! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE?
WARNING: Winning, if I did win, may cause me to bust out in dance where ever I happen to get the news. my mission almost complete!

I dig Nate's Italian Style Meatballs. They taste so real when I toss them in with pasta! I rarely ate real meatballs in pasta before I went veg (just that yucky "meat sauce"), but these are awesome.
They also make a great party meatball. Heat them in the crockpot with (I swear) grape jelly, chili sauce, and a few spices and no omni can resist!
Best yet I can find them at my neighborhood Kroger grocery. I don't like waiting to make a meal because all the weird ingredients are only sold in a special store on the other side of town!

My favorite memory of using faux meat and dairy was when a few years ago I had Christmas dinner at my house and prepared a vegan version of my mothers Beef Stroganoff recipe using Morningstar Farms steak strips and Tofutti sour supreme. Not only did no one catch on that it was all fake, but they actually complimented me on how great it was and how the sauce was thick yet didn't upset their stomachs. My mother was amazed at how good faux meat could be and became a vegetarian herself at age 50, later convincing my father (a life long meat-eater and victim of 3 heart attacks already) to become a vegetarian at age 56. I'm not sure Morningstar Farms is my favorite faux brand, but their products versatility certainly paved the way for four other members of my family to become vegetarian as well.

I love to make homemade seitan. It is so easy to make and so good it usually doesn't make it to a storage container. You can just slice it off the block and eat it as is. But it makes excellent stroganoff or open face "au jus" sandwiches. It grinds wonderfully to shape into a 'meat'loaf or to use as ground style for pasta sauce, 'meat'balls, anything! It's so easy to do and you can freeze it (again if it survive the transfer to a container!).

My favorite faux meat dish is called Vegan Country Steak. Oh it is so amazing. Essentially it is soy protein patties that are deep fried (soft on the inside and crusty on the outside) served on a bed of noodles, topped with a gravy sauce. A medley of vegetables accompany this main entree with a ranch dressing.
Why is it so great? I never get tired of it.
If people who frown when you mention the word 'tofu' would just try something like this, I think their attitude would change towards this wonderful and diverse food.

I've been a vegetarian for almost a year now and love it. It was hard at first because I was so used to having family bbq's 2 and 3 times a week, but I've found some great altenatives. I really like the bbq veggie riblets made by gardenburger. I buy them in the frozen food section at my local grocery store. I also loved chili so I took my mom's delicious superbowl chili recipe and tweaked it so now I have a fantastic hearty vegan chili recipe. When I invite my friends over and I make them a vegan meal, they don't even know it! When I tell them it's not really meat they're very suprised that it was so good. I love jerky, too. It was by far my favorite snack before I became a vegetarian. I actually haven't heard of your company because I live in a small town. It's hard to get myself good food here, I have to special order it. Wow! Look at all the comments!! I don't know if I can say anything to compare with some of the neat (some very funny) personal stories up there, but I do have an amusing one!
My fiance is a meat lover, and I love him and don't try to change him... much.
He used to not care about free range or organic because it is "more expensive", but since i've taken him to a farm, he realizes how important it is that if you eat meat, to at least be a responsible consumer.
We've gone from that to now, he only has meat as a meal a few times a week. Because he "likes the taste" and "can't give it up".
My dirty little secret...?
Most of the "meat" he has is Veggie, and he can't tell the difference!!
I can't wait to see the look on his face when I get him to try these pepperonis.
Maybe i'll let him in on my dirty little secret at our wedding!
:)

One of my favorite vegan products is faux ground beef from Boca. It is a wonderful replacement in any recipe requiring ground beef. The taste and texture leave nothing to be desired. I had a New Year's Eve party this year where everyone was a meat-eater, and I made "beef" and chile empanadas. Not one guest knew they were eating fake meat! They all kept complimenting me on how good the empanadas were! At that time, no one really knew that I was becoming a vegetarian, so they really did have no clue that they were eating non-meat.

I am a huge fan of Bryanna Clark Grogan's "beefy" seitan roast. The recipe is a bit complicated, but it makes a ton and all my die-hard carnivorous friends think it's fab.
My husband, an omni, said that this roast (and other homemade seitan I have tried since then) actually made him think it might be OK to give up meat. He's not 100% yet, but getting closer every day. He even said he preferred the seitan "turkey" & vegan gravy I made for Thanksgiving over the real thing made by my mom. This from a guy who used to have to have cheese on his veggies to eat 'em!!

I decided to go vegan, I kid you not, three days ago. I have a myriad of reasons for doing so, but one major reason is that I suffer from IBS so dairy, eggs, and red meat actually make me very sick. Well, not an hour ago I hoofed it over to my local specialty grocery market and picked up fixins for a jihugic vegan deli style sandwich. Sprouted grain bread, spinach, sprouts, Veganaise, Vegan Gourmet jack, smoked Tofurkey, and Faking Bacon. Ohmygod it was amazing. All the flavour one could want from a deli sammich without that whole icky, slimy, I am selling my soul and hurting myself by eating this feeling. Now I really know that I will be able to make this change. I can do this thing.
As I am a flight attendant, and am always travelling, I sure could use that tofu jerkey to keep up my energy in case of emergencies.

I would have to say my favorite "meat" product would be veggie corn dogs by morningstar farms. Unfortunately I won't be able to have any more because I'm going vegan. But, no kidding, I opened up the package and seriously thought I opened up real meat. I was about to take it back because it tasted too good to be made out of soy, but I eventually found out that they were all like that. I was so surprised by how awesome they tasted that I tricked my family into eating them and they couldn't tell the difference. In fact, they ended up eating all of mine! I wish I could say that I turned them vegetarian after that, but at least they liked the food and it made them more open to vegetarian options. I have a low blood sugar problem (hypoglycemia), so my dad is always concerned that I am going to lack in the protein I need to stay healthy and he doesnt want me to end up in the hospital. I tell him all the time about the healthy benefits and that's why he is letting me do this. If I had some of the "beef jerky" I could take it around and keep my protein up while going about daily tasks. It would probably let my dad sleep better at night knowing I got what I needed. Thanks Guys for this contest. It's awesome :-)

After giving up meat and seafood 5 years ago, I realized how much I missed simple things like tuna and chicken salad sandwiches, potato salad, even beef jerky! I've found jerky substitutes (thanks to Primal Strips), but every faux meat and potato salad had a sticky fake mayo on them that I just didn't like. So I started making my own with Veet or Quorn brand "chicken" (or buttery yukon gold potatoes for potato salad), onions, celery, mustard, olives, pickles - anything and everything you used to love in your meat salads - add a little extra salt for something more akin to tuna. I throw it all into a hand chopper and voila, "meat" (or potato) salad. If you want something mayo-esq add sour cream, Imo, or veganaise depending on your taste/preference/diet.
Both salads are great, and many omnivores don't know the difference!

I was vegetarian for 10 years, and went back to the meat market, but after digestive issues, and the rise and cost of chicken and fish, I've gone back to my Leaf eating ways.
My favorite meaty substitute....tofu-chicken.
It looks, smells, ( could bawk I guess) and taste just like chicken.....

My favorite faux meat product is Ray's Seitan. It comes in it's own gravy in a little tub, and when you heat it up and put it on a roll...well, it's just a sandwich of pure heaven!

Ever since I made the pledge to be veg 5 years ago, I have constantly been on the lookout to find new vegan foods and products. For the most part, I have been quite pleased with the wide variety of faux meat product available on the market. I fell in love with the Morning Star meal starters, the Smart Deli turkey slices and the Gimme Lean ground “beef,” but after months and months of trying new products, I was still unable to find a jerky product that could satisfy my cravings. That is until I tried primal strips for the very first time. It was absolute heaven. They are the most delicious jerky substitute ever! And so much better than real jerky. I just can’t get enough of it. My sister even made me a gift basket filled with all the different flavors of primal strips for my birthday a few months ago. That was by far my favorite gift this year. Yummy! I would definitely recommend trying these, but be careful they can be addicting.

I am a 59 year old American now permantly living in Belgium for the past few years. I have been a vegetarian for almost 40 years and my wonderful Flemish wife is also a long-time veggie. Here a few faux-meats are available at the better stocked food stores but the selection is NOTHING like what normally is available in the States. The key in cooking here is CREATIVITY!! We use tofu, tepheh, and seitan in any way we can! I love making homemade seitan using very fine ground whole wheat flour. One can find a variety of similar recipes for it on the net, and with a little trial and error, can come up with a VERY compatible substitute for the commercial offerings (very pricey here!). It is a bit time consuming but if you take care to rinse, and rinse, and RINSE your glutten blob befor boiling it so as there is NO wheat bran left in it, you likely can come out with a fine chunck of homemade seitan in the end! Give it a try!! And ... "Smakelijk"

my favorite is probably the quoron chicken nuggest, patties, and cutlets.
sometimes i don't like the taste of the soy, and their products are soyfree, yet still contain a lot of protein in them.
they are definately delicious.

Nothing feels as good physically (and mentally) as being a veggie. The rewards are daily.

I like to make seitan in the shape of little animals using ice cream sandwich makers. Then, I dip them in various sauces made from vegetables to give them color. Without this color and shape, my meat-substitute snacks could not be alive. The act of clothing them and putting them in the likes of living forms gives them a quality unlike any other meat snack. Who would eat a round tube of faux-meat when you could eat faux-meat in the shape of living meat?

Favorite faux-meat: Gardenburger Breakfast Sausages. I drive from Oklahoma City to Dallas just to get them. Believe me, I've tried them all and it's the only one that comes close for a girl in beef country.

I grew up eating Soul Food and never thought I'd ever eat it again after going Veg 8 years ago. But I came across this wonderful cookbook that had some of the greatest recipes for Soul Food.
My favorite recipe was Fried Tofu Fingers. The first time I made these things I ate them and thought I was in heaven. I told my sister (who is not a vegetarian) about them and how delicious they were and that she had to try them.
So I made another batch with every intention on driving all of 2 blocks to her house to share these magnificent masterpieces of vegan cuisine with her. However, they ended up being shared on a plate with a spoonful of mashed potatoes and green beans, and some were eaten as they came out of the skillet. I couldn't help myself. They were so delicious.
I still have not made them for my sister. But maybe next time I'll just cook them over her house.

My Favorite meatless choice are St-Yves franfurters, meatless and containing no animals. I like them BBQ with some punchy lime / veg mayo sauce, with a a hint of chipolte peppers. Yum Yum Jim

My all-time favorite vegan meal is my fried tofu...I marinate the cubed tofu (yes, it actually does marinate!) in a dairy-free italian dressing (Annie's organics has a good one), shake them around in italian seasoned bread crumbs and lightly brown in olive oil. Add some sauteed mushrooms and squash (yellow and green) as a side dish and you are good to go! My non-vegetarian friends always request the fried tofu when visiting!

I'm throwing myself on your mercy. I am new to veggie-ism and am desperate for meat alternatives. Jerky? Big temptation. Slim Jims? Even worse.
Help . . .
me . . .

Hmmmmmmmm...
My husband makes a mean grilled portobello sandwich with a swanky garlic spread. His veggie sloppy joes have a zippy little tang. I just love his mushroom stroganoff with portobellos & veggie strips. I make a mean scrambled tofu for "any time of day". OK, so you only wanted just one????

I love Tofurky Jerky peppered flavor. It reminds me so much of the dry salty jerky I ate 20 years ago when I was not a vegetarian that I used to love. It is so delicious. It makes a great and healthy snack.

Wow I am very excited to see that there is now vegetarian jerky!!!
Favorite faux meat: Probably Smart Ground by Lifesmart. I can make my own sausage, meat sauce and meatballs with the stuff and it's delicious!

When it comes to meat alternatives, give me seitan — it tastes even meatier than meat. If I loved it any more, I'd be a seitan worshipper.

My favorite faux meat would have to be the Veggie burger patties at Disney World's "Peco Bill's" in Magic Kingdom. They were SO good. They are, by far, the best veggie patties I have ever eaten.

There are a ton of great faux meat products and recipes out there, but if i had to choose...
For prepackaged, my favorite has to be the Gardenburger BBQ ribs (though, they're pretty small so I call them riblets). The texture is exactly like real ribs and the BBQ sauce is to die for!
As for partly homemade, i found a vegan orange "chicken" (tofu) recipe through a google search, made the sauce, and then poured it over some soy nuggets- they turned out awesome!
As many others have said, jerky seems to be one of the hardest faux meat products to locate (and seafood is hard to find as well, for me at least). I've seen a whole bunch of brands online, but I have yet to find a store that stocks them locally. I used to snack on jerky all the time before I became vegetarian, so it would be nice to be able to have that snack again without having to go out and buy a food dehydrator and a whole bunch of tofu. =)
